Chord

**Chordae tendineae** (commonly referred to as **chordae**) are thin, fibrous cords found in the heart, primarily connecting the papillary muscles to the tricuspid and mitral valve leaflets. These delicate yet strong structures play a critical role in cardiac function by preventing valve prolapse during ventricular contraction. As the ventricles contract, the chordae tense, anchoring the valve leaflets and ensuring proper blood flow from the atria to the ventricles without regurgitation. Composed of collagen, elastin, and endothelial cells, their resilience is vital for maintaining valve integrity and efficient hemodynamics. Dysfunction or rupture of the chordae can lead to valvular disorders, such as mitral regurgitation, compromising cardiac output.
